Today’s Record

Newk’s Time

Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio Hackensack NJ, September 22, 1957
Label – Blue Note

Saxophone – Sonny Rollins
Bass – Doug Watkins
Drums – Philly Joe Jones
Piano – Wynton Kelly

Sonny Rollins would not or maybe could not play unless he was really feeling it. People talk of seeing Sonny in shades, standing on the stage of smoke filled dives playing the same note or series of notes for up to 45 minutes before getting into the groove and starting a set.
The recording genius of Rudy Van Gelder along with the fluidity of this quartet was enough to get Sonny moving on this early fall day. The autumnal equinox of 1957 must have sent vibrations through the cosmos.
